Home Alone Course

Participants learn about being safe when they are without the direct supervision of an adult, parent or guardian for short periods of time in this blended Home Alone program provided by First For Safety. We take the best content from each of the Canadian Red Cross Stay Safe! program and the Canadian Safety Council's Home Alone program to prepare participants to stay home alone confidently and safely for short periods of time.


TIMES: 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM - Please note we do not offer before and after care hours or services. Our course room and an instructor will be available 15 minutes prior to the course start and for 15 minutes following.


PREREQUISITES: Ages 9 to 12 for this course. Please note the minimum age is 9 years of age (or completion of grade 3).


MATERIALS: Training booklet and needed materials are provided to each participant as well as a certificate of completion.


COURSE CONTENT:

  • The importance of responsibility and respect while being accountable for yourself
  • How to make good decisions
  • The importance of setting and following safety rules when on your own
  • How to answer the phone safely
  • How and when to call 9-1-1
  • How to stay safe at home within the community
  • How to prepare for, recognize and respond to unexpected situations (i.e. inclement weather, strangers, phone calls, and unanticipated visitors)
  • Basic first aid skills
  • Additional content taught at First For Safety: What you need in a first aid kit, how to use a fire extinguisher, internet safety, and more.


TO BRING: Please bring indoor shoes or slippers, a snack (tree-nut free), a water bottle (no juice in the training room), a notebook and a pencil/pen. No permanent or smelly markers please. We will require participants to spell out the name they want on their certificate.


PRICING: $50 +HST per participant. Please note payment is required to confirm registration(s). We do not hold spots without payment once a wait list has started. Upon registration, you are able to pay by sending an e-transfer, by providing credit card details over the phone, by visiting us in-store to pay in person.


REGISTRATION DETAILS: We require an emergency phone contact for the duration of the course as well as an authorized pick up name and phone number. Please see the participant information form in the documents listed below. We will also email this to you upon registration. We require this form prior to the course to ensure everyone's safety.
